And the Winner is… Dr. Cheryl Petersilge!

Dr. Cheryl Petersilge is a pioneer in the field of imaging informatics. She is currently CEO and Founder of Vidagos, a consulting company that provides enterprise imaging strategy and expertise to healthcare providers. Her latest venture builds on over 20 years of leadership experience and innovation in imaging and informatics at the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals of Cleveland. She has held numerous academic appointments and industry leadership designations, including being named one of three US representatives to the HIMSS International Center of Excellence for development of the Digital Imaging Adoption Model.

This RadEqual award is open to both men and women who have helped support and further the advancement of women in imaging informatics.

And the Winner is… Dr. Alexander Towbin!

Dr. Towbin is a radiologist, the Neil D. Johnson Chair of Radiology Informatics, and associate chief of Radiology, Clinical Operations and Radiology Informatics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), co-chairs the HIMSS/SIIM Enterprise Imaging Committee, co-chairs the American College of Radiology Data Science Institute Non-Interpretive Panel, and serves on the American College of Radiology/Radiological Society of North America Common Data Element Steering Committee. In addition to his expertise in pediatric imaging, he is a noted author, speaker, researcher, and advocate for increasing female representation within the field of imaging informatics.

This RadEqual award recognizes the next generation of emerging women leaders in imaging informatics.

And the Winner is… Dr. Carol Wu!

Dr. Wu is a board-certified radiologist specializing in Thoracic Imaging with particular expertise in the interpretation of Chest CT and PET-CT. Her research interests include improving imaging utilization in the evaluation of patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer. She is an active member of various radiology organizations and serves as the Chair of the Big Data Subcommittee of the Society of Thoracic Radiology.

And the Winner is… Dr. Ann Scherzinger!

Dr. Ann L Scherzinger is a Professor of Radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she served as Chief of the Radiological Sciences Division and as a Medical Physicist supporting PACS, CT, and Ultrasound at University of Colorado Hospital. She was their first RIS-PACS administrator and supported the implementation of three PACS systems. Currently, she supports special informatics projects at University Hospital, focusing on quality and safety issues. She is an Imaging Consultant to the School of Medicine Medical Student Curriculum Committee and serves as an instructor in imaging for medical students, graduate students, and technologists, at the University of Colorado. She has been on the Board of Directors of SIIM and is currently the chair of the Education Committee.

  • Dr. Elizabeth Krupinski: Elizabeth Krupinski, PhD, is Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine.

Charlene is currently the Director of Medical Imaging Information Technology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. As the director of medical imaging information technology, Charlene manages a team that implements and supports all the radiology applications that are used in radiology for five hospitals and four freestanding imaging centers.

  • Dr. Teresa Martin-Carreras and Dr. Tirath Patel: Founders of #RADdiversity – Meeting for the first time at #ACR2019, and inspired by great initiatives of others, Dr. Martin-Carreras and Dr. Patel wanted to have a place to celebrate the breakthroughs and discuss challenges that remain to achieving D&I in radiology.
  • Neil Tenenholz: In addition to serving in the ACR’s Data Science Institute, Dr. Neil Tenenholtz is a Senior Research Engineer at Microsoft Research where he develops computationally efficient probabilistic methods for automated machine learning.

And the Winner is… Dr. Anant Madabhushi!

Dr. Anant Madabhushi is Director of the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD); F. Alex Nason Professor II, Department of Biomedical Engineering; and on faculty in the Departments of Pathology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Urology, General Medical Sciences, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Anant Madabhushi is committed to advancing the careers of women in the imaging informatics space. He thoughtfully considers and purses diversity on his team and projects as well as in the composition of symposia panels and advisory committees. He has supported several women on his team to achieve promotion, including to the positions of assistant professor and research associate.

This RadEqual award recognizes the next generation of emerging women leaders in imaging informatics.

Runners-up:

  • Kori Stewards: Kori Stewart is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Director for the CT, MRI and Ultrasound programs at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, CT.
  • Dr. Kirti Magudia: Kirti Magudia, MD, Ph.D. is finishing her radiology training at the University of California, San Francisco as a T32 research fellow in the Biomedical Imaging for Clinical Scientists Program followed by a clinical fellowship in abdominal imaging and ultrasound.

And the Winner is… Dr. Michelle Bardis!

As a former NASA electrical engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Dr. Bardis is using her mathematical and programming skills to analyze a new type of data: medical images. Her signal processing skills are now being used to solve problems looking at matrices that represent anatomical data instead of space communication data. She plans to build her medical knowledge as a radiology resident and combine it with her technical skills for developing better tools for medical image analysis. She envisions that will AI transform radiology and her eventual goal is to become a principal investigator and leader in this specialty.

  • Dr. Faaiza Mahmoud: Dr. Mahmoud is the Body Imaging Fellowship Director at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School.

And the Winner is… Dr. Agnieszka Solberg!

Dr. Solberg is a Vascular and Interventional radiologist who passionately advocates for women, particularly women in radiology/informatics. Having served 14 years in the US Army, she continues to serve others by creating a group for over 3,000 women radiologists and providing them with valuable resources to navigate through the struggles of being a woman in a male- dominant field. Board certified by the ABIM, ABNM, and ABR, she actively practices as an Interventional Radiologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at UND.

Dr. Nina Kottler is practicing radiologist and Vice President of Clinical Operations at Radiology Partners. As the first radiologist in this practice, she helped create a deconstructed PACS platform that is being used and expanded upon as their practice grows. She also runs RP’s internal teleradiology service, serves on RP’s Clinical Value Team, AI Committee, and much more. She helped to create RP’s first machine learning tool, recoMD, a tool that alerts the radiologist to evidence-based best practive and billing conditions before the radiologist signs off on their report. Dr. Kottler was elected to serve on the ACR’s informatics commission (2017-2019), the Non-Interpretive Panel for the ACR’s Data Science Institute (2018-2019), SIIM’s Al Industry Liaison Subcommittee (2018-2019), the Radiology Informatics Subcommittee for RSNA’s Education Exhibits Committee (2017-2020), RSNA’s RadLex Steering Committee, and the Learning Community in Radiology (2018-2019)

Nabile M. Safdar, MD, MPH believes that technology can be leveraged to continuously improve the quality of health care delivery and communication. This belief motivates his work as Director of the Division of Imaging Informatics. Safdar has been a speaker at major professional and scientific conferences and serves on numerous committees at the national level, including the American College of Radiology IT and Informatics Committee, American Board of Radiology IT Advisory Committee, and the American Roentgen Ray Society Research Committee. Safdar commpleted his imaging informatics and Musculoskeletal Imaging at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD.

And the Winner is… Dr. Lindsey Shea, Radiology Resident at Indiana University

Dr. Lindsey Shea is a Radiology Resident at Indiana University who has already distuinguished herself as an emerging leader in Imaging Informatics. She has presented multiple scientific presentations at SIIM and is part of the leadership team of the Resident/Fellow Committee. In addition to her work at SIIM, Dr. Shea is part of the ACR Data Science Institute serving on the Non-interpretive Panel and the Reading Room Facing subpanel. Dr. Shea’s growing influence in informatics is evidenced by her being asked to give a plenary talk at this years RSNA on social media and helping to lead an RSNA journal club on machine learning/artificial intelligence. Through her work, Dr. Shea has been an advocate for change and improvement through informatics.

The RADxx Champion award recognizes individuals who have helped to sponsor the career development of women in medical imaging informatics. Notable nominees include:

Laura Coombs is the Senior Director of Informatics and Data Science Institute at the ACR. She has a PhD in Statistics from Oklahoma State University and has been a key expert in the development of the ACR’s registries. Her work in the establishment of the Data Science Institute has been foundational in enabling safe appropriate data science solutions for patients.

Dr. Katherine Andriole is Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Director of Research Strategy and Operations at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham Women’s Hospital Center for Clinical Data Science. She has been a leader in biomedical imaging informatics for the last 25 years carrying out research, teaching, clinical service, and administrative activities. Additionally, Dr. Andriole was instrumental in designing, building and implementing PACS before they became commercial entities. Dr. Andriole has developed multiple courses, directed fellowships in medical imaging informatics, and mentored over 60 trainees, which makes her the definition of a RADxx Trailblazer.

And the Winner is… Dr. Tessa Cook

Dr. Tessa Cook is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Cook has been a passionate advocate for medical imaging informatics since her residency days and is now the fellowship director for the Penn Radiology Informatics Fellowship. In a prime example of medical imaging informatics at work, Dr. Cook is the principal developer of RADIANCE, a free, open-source dose monitoring software for CT, which was released worldwide in 2010. She is a frequent speaker at imaging informatics events and most recently, she helped develop the National Imaging Informatics Curriculum and Course to introduce senior radiology residents to the fundamentals of imaging informatics, with emphasis on practical concepts and knowledge.

And the Winner is… Dr. Judy Wawira Gichoya

Dr. Judy Wawira Gichoya is a resident Radiologist at Indiana University School of Medicine. In her more than six years experience in imaging informatics, Dr. Wawira Gichoya has received a number of distinctions, including, Best Hackathon project at the 2015 annual meeting of the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) for integrating FHIR images into an open source electronic medical records system, the Young Alumni Award 2015 from Indiana University Purdue University School of Informatics and the Google Anita Borg Award 2012 for women that have excelled in computing. As the RADxx Rising Star, Dr. Wawira Gichoya will receive a travel award to attend the SIIM Annual Conference and will be paired with leaders from the RADxx community to provide a priceless, guided mentor experience while at the event.

Dr. Langlotz serves as Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Informatics at Stanford University. For more than 15 years Dr. Langlotz has contributed on a global scale to the growth of informatics in radiology, especially with his work as a committed advocate for improved radiology reports. A respected teacher and mentor, Dr. Langlotz and his trainees have been recognized for their contributions to radiology research with numerous scientific awards. He has personally mentored many of today’s women leaders in medical imaging informatics, particularly during his time as Vice Chair for Informatics, Department of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. This career sponsorship of women in imaging informatics is what earns him the distinction of RADxx Champion.
