Our technology spans the patient journey to streamline processes and connect physicians, no matter where they are.
East River Medical Imaging, a multi-site radiology practice in New York City, implemented InteleShare several years ago and has been successfully using it ever since. We spoke with Dr. Timothy Deyer, the Chief Medical Information Officer at East River, to discuss their experience with our solutions.
In 2021, East River was looking for an off-premise backup for their main PACS in case there was a failure of their on-premise server, as well as a solution that would help them modernize their image sharing workflow and better power their patient and physician portals. Before implementing InteleShare, East River used CDs to share imaging with referring physicians and patients. Not only was this labor-intensive for their practice and delayed result delivery to patients by a couple of days, it was also costly.
It’s a simple solution. It’s been very reliable – we have had no problems with it going down or accessing studies. It just works.
Dr. Timothy Deyer Chief Medical Information Officer at East River Medical Imaging
The implementation of InteleShare was a strategic move for East River that was designed to address their workflow challenges. The rollout process began with integrating InteleShare as a backup to their main PACS, ensuring that all imaging data would be safely stored off-premises. This off-site backup strategy, InteleShare’s Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA), proved critical when East River faced an unexpected failure in their on-premise PACS system. Thanks to InteleShare, the practice was able to swiftly restore patient data without any data loss or interruption in business continuity.
Next, the practice worked on transitioning to a digital workflow. East River had a growing need to reduce the use of CDs for sharing imaging studies for both cost and efficiency reasons. By integrating InteleShare’s cloud-based sharing capabilities, East River immediately began to see a significant drop in CD usage, saving them time and money while simplifying the sharing process. While some CD use remained, the reduction was substantial, meeting their goal of cutting unnecessary costs and improving efficiency.
This enhanced digital accessibility gave patients and physicians access to view studies online within minutes, which added an extra layer of convenience to their workflow and decreased turnaround times for patients.
One of the major factors behind East River’s choice of InteleShare was its market prominence and wide acceptance by other institutions. This market credibility not only facilitated smooth internal adoption but also eased the process of sharing imaging with external partners and institutions.
Dr. Deyer explained, “InteleShare was really the big player in the market. We were motivated that other people had found that InteleShare worked well. We knew that it would be easy to share studies back and forth… So many other institutions use InteleShare. When we ask to do a share over InteleShare, we don’t really face pushback from anybody, they say that they have an account, it is no problem, and to send it over.” This simplifies and accelerates the collaboration process.
InteleShare brought multiple benefits to East River, cutting costs while streamlining the entire image-sharing process. As Dr. Deyer noted, “CD reduction has been one of the benefits. That was actually our initial impetus for searching out a solution – to stop printing out all these silly CDs. Also, getting our studies into a storage location that is off-premise has been a benefit that provides us with a safety net to make sure that if our on-premise system goes down that we have a backup and have patient studies located safely.”
Beyond cost savings, InteleShare’s portals for patients significantly improved the patient experience. Digital accessibility offers greater convenience, reducing stress and uncertainty for patients who are eager to see their results quickly. It also allows patients to share their studies seamlessly with other specialists if needed, for more timely consultations and treatment decisions.
Through the adoption of InteleShare, East River Medical Imaging has modernized their workflow, secured their imaging data, and significantly improved their image-sharing capabilities. InteleShare’s widespread acceptance has also facilitated collaboration, reinforcing its value as a trusted solution in radiology services.
The practice has seen reduced costs, improved operational efficiency, and peace of mind thanks to reliable off-premises storage.
